Fire Safety and Redundancy on a Commercial Komodo Liveaboard

On a liveaboard working Komodo, fire is the emergency with the least margin for error. Help is far away, the vessel is often at anchor at night with guests asleep in cabins below, and a fire that reaches the accommodation on a timber vessel escalates fast. The design answers are detection early, suppression in the machinery space, escape routes from every space, and enough redundancy that a fire does not also take your ability to respond.

Where fires start

In roughly descending order of frequency on vessels of this type: the engine room, from fuel or lubricating oil onto hot surfaces, or from electrical faults; the galley, from cooking and from gas installations; electrical distribution and battery installations; and equipment spaces where a machine is running unattended, which on a dive boat includes the compressor.

Each of those has a design answer, and none of the answers is expensive relative to the consequence.

Machinery space protection

A fixed suppression system in the engine room, sized for the space and with a properly designed release arrangement, is the single most valuable fire installation on the vessel. It needs to work with the space sealed, which means remote shutdowns for engines, generators, ventilation fans and fuel supply that can be operated from outside the compartment. That last point gets missed: a suppression system in a compartment with ventilation fans still running and fuel still flowing is much less effective.

Supporting details: fuel and oil lines routed and shielded away from hot surfaces, hot surface insulation on exhaust runs, drip trays under engines and gensets, and no accumulated oily residue in bilges. A clean engine room is a fire safety measure.

Detection

Zoned detection covering machinery spaces, galley, accommodation, crew spaces and equipment rooms, with an alarm panel where it is monitored — the bridge, and audible in crew accommodation. Detector types matter by space: heat detection where cooking or normal machinery operation would cause smoke detectors to nuisance-alarm, smoke detection in accommodation. Nuisance alarms are dangerous because they lead crews to disable detectors, so specifying the right type for each space is a safety decision, not a technical detail.

Escape routes

Every guest and crew space needs a means of escape that does not depend on a single route past the most likely fire location. On liveaboards with cabins below and a single companionway, this is the design item most often compromised — usually because the alternative escape hatch competes with joinery or deck layout. It is not negotiable on a vessel carrying certified passengers.

Escape routes have to be usable by a guest, at night, woken from sleep, possibly in smoke. That means adequate hatch size, an opening mechanism operable without tools or instructions, escape lighting, and routes kept clear rather than used for stowage. Galley and gas

If the galley is gas, the installation deserves genuine attention: proper locker with overboard drainage, correct piping and fittings, gas detection with automatic shutoff, and a solenoid at the bottle. Gas leaks accumulate low in a hull. Electric galleys avoid the risk entirely but increase electrical load — see generator sizing. Either way, fire blankets and appropriate extinguishers at the galley, positioned so a person can reach them without passing the cooker.

Batteries and the compressor

Large battery installations, particularly lithium, need a considered fire risk assessment, proper ventilation, thermal management and crew who know the correct response — see solar and battery systems. The dive compressor is a high-pressure machine that often runs with nobody watching it; it should be in a ventilated space with detection, and the crew should have a habit of not leaving it unattended for long periods.

Redundancy is the real system

The things that decide outcomes after the fire starts: fire pumps with an independent power source so pumping does not depend on the machinery space you are fighting; portable extinguishers distributed so one is always reachable without walking toward the fire; communications that work when the main electrical system is down; life-saving appliances for full complement stowed where they remain accessible in the likely scenarios; and crew drilled on their roles.

Crew training is the lowest-cost and most effective element of the whole package, and it is the one most often neglected on boats where crew turnover is high.

On survey and refit

We check fixed system charge and service dates, remote shutdown function, detector coverage and type by space, escape hatch operability rather than presence, extinguisher service dates and placement, gas installation condition, and bilge cleanliness.
