Hull and Structure

Hull material and hull form are the two decisions on a Komodo liveaboard that cannot be revisited once the vessel exists. Everything downstream — how much power you need, which anchorages you can sell, what your annual maintenance bill looks like, how easily the boat can be surveyed, insured and eventually sold — traces back to what the hull is made of and what shape it takes. This silo covers those decisions from a yard-side perspective rather than a brochure one. Timber construction in the South Sulawesi shipwright tradition remains the lowest-capital route to a large hull in Indonesia and it is why so much of the working Komodo fleet is wooden, but it carries a maintenance discipline that owners consistently underestimate in warm tropical water. Steel costs more to fabricate and buys damage tolerance, measurable condition and a straightforward certification path. Aluminium buys weight, speed and range at a premium, with a narrower repair base in eastern Indonesia. Composite is dominant for tenders and transfer boats and rare at liveaboard scale here for reasons of tooling and repairability. Alongside material, this silo covers draft — which is a commercial decision disguised as a hydrostatic one, because it determines which overnight anchorages remain available to your itinerary — and structural modification such as hull extension, where naval architecture input separates a genuine product improvement from a boat that handles worse for the rest of its life. Notes are published by the Komodo Shipyard Build Desk and reflect what we see when hulls are opened up on the hard, not what is claimed at the dock.
