Steel vs Wood Hull for a Komodo Liveaboard: How to Actually Decide

Timber costs less to build and more to maintain; steel costs more to build and is easier to certify, insure and resell. For a boat working Komodo commercially, the decision usually comes down to three questions: how long you intend to own it, whether you will carry certified passengers under survey, and whether you have the maintenance discipline that a wooden hull demands in tropical water.

The capital cost gap is real, and it is not the whole story

Traditional timber construction in the South Sulawesi shipwright tradition remains the lowest-capital route to a large hull in Indonesia. That is why so much of the Komodo fleet is wooden. The labour is skilled, the technique is centuries old, the material is locally available, and the yards can build a substantial vessel for a fraction of what a steel equivalent costs to fabricate.

What the capital comparison hides is the whole-life cost. A timber hull in warm tropical water is in a permanent low-grade fight against rot, marine borers and fastening corrosion. Maintained properly it lasts decades. Neglected for two seasons it can develop problems that cost more to fix than the difference in build price ever saved. The relevant question is not which costs less to build, but which costs less over the way I will actually run this boat.

Maintenance burden

Timber demands attention on a schedule you cannot postpone. Caulking, fastening inspection, checking for fresh water intrusion around deck penetrations, keeping the bilge dry, and looking hard at the frame heels and garboard where rot begins. Fresh water does more damage than salt — a leaking deck fitting above a frame head is worth more attention than any amount of sea spray.

Steel has one dominant enemy, corrosion, and it is manageable with a coating system, anodes and inspection. Wastage happens in predictable places: bilges, tank tops, under insulation where moisture is trapped, and at weld heat-affected zones. The advantage of steel is that its failure mode is slow, visible and measurable with an ultrasonic gauge. Timber’s failure mode is often hidden until you open something.

Damage tolerance in a place with reefs and current

This is where steel earns its price. Komodo has strong tidal streams, coral heads, and anchorages where a dragging anchor puts you somewhere you do not want to be. A steel hull that touches will usually dent and stay watertight. A timber hull that touches at speed can spring a plank or crack a frame, and repairs to a plank are structurally more involved than a dent.

Aluminium sits between the two: lighter and faster than steel, more expensive, and less tolerant of the sort of contact that a working charter boat eventually experiences. It is a serious choice for expedition vessels prioritising speed and range, and a hard one to justify for a conventional dive liveaboard.

Certification, class and survey

If your vessel will carry certified passengers, the ease of surveying the structure matters. Steel plate thickness can be measured non-destructively at any point. Weld quality can be inspected and documented. A surveyor can build a defensible picture of structural condition without destroying anything. On timber, condition assessment involves sample openings, probing, and a degree of professional judgement — which is legitimate but harder to reduce to a number a class society or an underwriter finds comfortable.

Comfort, noise and heat

Timber is a better insulator and a quieter material. A wooden hull is noticeably cooler and quieter than an uninsulated steel one, which matters when guests sleep aboard in the tropics. Steel can be brought to the same standard with proper insulation and noise treatment, but that is a real cost line and it is often the first thing trimmed when a budget tightens. Resale and the market

The Indonesian secondhand market for wooden phinisi is deep and active, and a well-maintained wooden boat with a good reputation sells. Steel vessels with documented survey history hold value more predictably, and appeal to a wider pool of international buyers who may be uncomfortable underwriting a wooden hull they cannot easily assess. Timber makes sense when you want maximum vessel for the capital, you value the aesthetic and the cultural connection that guests in this market genuinely respond to, and you have or will hire crew and a maintenance regime that takes the hull seriously. Steel makes sense when you are building a long-horizon asset, want a straightforward certification and insurance path, expect the boat to work hard through a long season, and would rather spend money once during construction than repeatedly over twenty years.
