Systems and Equipment

Systems are where a Komodo liveaboard earns or loses its reviews. Guests rarely comment on frame scantlings; they comment on whether the cabin was cool and quiet, whether their tanks were filled on time, whether there was hot fresh water after the fourth dive, and whether a generator ran all night beside their bed. This silo works through the equipment chain the way we specify it: from the operating profile — guests, nights, dives per day, season and cruising range — outward to installed power, fuel range, generating capacity, dive compressor and bank sizing, watermaker output, air conditioning architecture, solar and battery storage, and the manoeuvring gear needed to berth at Labuan Bajo and pick up moorings in a running tidal stream. The recurring theme is that catalogue sizing fails in this operating area. Tidal streams in the park straits can exceed six knots, so propulsion specified for average conditions misses slack water at dive sites, which is the product the guest paid for. Afternoon air conditioning load coincides with compressor filling, which sets the generator peak. Watermaker production becomes waste water within hours, which sets holding tank volume. Every number pulls on the others, and the boats that work well are the ones where somebody did that arithmetic before the joinery went in rather than after. Published by the Komodo Shipyard Build Desk, with an emphasis on failure modes observed in service rather than manufacturer claims.
