Engine Power and Fuel Range for Komodo and Flores Itineraries

Size the propulsion package against the worst case you will meet weekly, not the average condition. On a Komodo itinerary that worst case is holding schedule at full load against a tidal stream that can exceed six knots in the straits. A boat that cannot do that does not merely arrive late — it misses slack water at the dive site, which is the product the guests paid for.

The tidal problem in plain terms

Water moving between the Flores Sea and the Indian Ocean is funnelled through narrow passages between the islands. The result is strong, variable tidal streams with eddies, overfalls and upwellings that shift through the tide cycle. Dive sites in the park are frequently dived at slack water or on a specific phase, because the current is the reason the marine life is there and also the reason you cannot dive it at the wrong time.

That makes your schedule tidally constrained rather than clock constrained. If a transit that should take ninety minutes takes two and a half hours because you are punching a four-knot stream at eight knots of boat speed, you have not lost an hour — you have lost a dive.

Sizing installed power

The calculation has three inputs: the resistance of your hull at the speed you need, the margin required to maintain that speed against the adverse stream you expect, and the load condition — full fuel, full water, full guests and gear, fouled bottom near the end of the antifoul cycle. Most underpowered boats in this fleet were specified against a clean hull, light load and calm water, and they are honest about it exactly once, on the first busy week of the season.

We advise sizing so the vessel can maintain its planned transit speed at full load against the adverse current it will actually encounter, with reserve above that. The extra installed power costs money once. Missing dives costs reputation continuously.

Single or twin

Twin engines cost more, complicate the engine room, and consume more space. They also mean a mechanical failure in a narrow strait at spring tide is an inconvenience rather than an emergency. Given where this vessel operates and that it carries paying passengers, redundancy deserves an explicit decision rather than a default. Twin installations also give better low-speed manoeuvring authority, which matters in Labuan Bajo and at crowded anchorages.

If a single-engine configuration is chosen for cost or hull-form reasons, the compensating measures — a properly sized bow thruster, reliable auxiliary power, a get-home capability and a serious spares inventory — should be specified deliberately rather than assumed.

Fuel capacity and range

Range is consumption at transit speed multiplied by usable fuel, minus a reserve you actually respect. The itinerary decides how much you need:

  • Labuan Bajo round trips inside the park. Short legs, frequent returns to a bunkering point. Modest tankage is sufficient and every extra tonne of fuel is payload you are not carrying.
  • Extended Flores and Sumbawa itineraries. Longer legs, fewer reliable bunkering points, more reserve needed.
  • Alor, Banda and Raja Ampat repositioning. This is a different vessel specification. Long passages, sparse fuel infrastructure, and a genuine need for range and reserve rather than a comfortable margin.

Fuel quality and filtration deserve attention in this region. Specify generous primary and secondary filtration with duplex arrangements so filters can be changed underway, a water separator, and a fuel polishing capability on any vessel that will bunker away from major ports. Contaminated fuel is one of the more common causes of an unplanned trip termination out here.

Consumption and the economics of speed

Resistance rises steeply with speed. A displacement liveaboard pushed two knots above its efficient cruise can consume dramatically more fuel for a marginal time saving. The commercial optimum is usually to run at an efficient speed and plan the schedule around tides, not to run fast and fight them. That is a design conclusion as much as an operational one: it argues for a hull and propeller matched to an efficient cruise, with power in reserve for when the tide requires it, rather than a boat optimised to run flat out.

Propeller and gearbox matching

Installed horsepower means nothing if the propeller cannot absorb it at the right revolutions. A mismatched propeller either overloads the engine, which shortens its life and produces smoke and poor economy, or underloads it, which wastes the capacity you paid for. Trials

Prove it in the water, loaded, in real current. A speed run in flat water at light displacement tells you almost nothing about whether the boat will make its schedule in August.
