Choosing a Stabiliser System for a Komodo Liveaboard

Decide where the roll actually hurts before choosing the technology. Gyroscopic units work at anchor and underway without hull penetrations but need structure and substantial electrical capacity. Fin systems generally perform better underway and need penetrations and hydraulics. Passive rigs cost little and only help at rest. Most Komodo liveaboards have an at-anchor problem, which is why gyros have become common in this fleet.

Why roll matters commercially here

A Komodo liveaboard spends a large proportion of its time stationary — anchored or moored overnight at dive sites, and stationary during surface intervals. Guests sleep aboard and eat aboard. Roll at anchor in a beam swell is the single most common cause of a poor review that has nothing to do with the diving, and it disproportionately affects the guests who paid the most for the largest cabins, which are often the ones furthest from the centre of roll.

Underway roll matters too, particularly on longer transits out toward Sumbawa or Alor, but it is tolerated better because guests expect movement while moving.

Gyroscopic stabilisers

A spinning mass in a gimbal generates a righting moment. The key operational advantage is that it works at zero speed, which is exactly the condition where a dive liveaboard needs it most. There are no hull penetrations, no appendages to damage on a reef or foul with a mooring line, and no drag penalty underway.

The costs are structural and electrical. The unit must be mounted on a foundation capable of transferring substantial dynamic loads into the hull structure, which on a retrofit means finding or building that structure in a location that is also acceptable for weight distribution. The electrical demand during spool-up and operation is significant, which flows directly into generator sizing — see generator sizing. Spool-up time also means it is not instant on demand.

Fin stabilisers

Actively controlled fins are highly effective underway and modern systems with larger fins can provide meaningful stabilisation at rest as well. They require hull penetrations, hydraulic power, and careful placement relative to the turn of the bilge and the centre of roll.

In Komodo the specific concerns are physical: fins are appendages in waters with reef, strong current and busy anchorages, and they add draft locally. Retractable designs reduce the exposure at the cost of complexity. The hydraulic system adds a maintenance domain to a vessel that may already be at the limit of what its engineer can support in a remote area.

Passive systems

Flopper-stoppers, paravanes and similar rigs deployed at anchor remain genuinely useful and remain inexpensive. They damp at-anchor roll appreciably, cost a fraction of an active system, need no electrical power and can be repaired anywhere. The costs are crew labour to deploy and recover, deck clutter, gear that can foul, and no benefit underway.

For an owner whose budget cannot absorb an active system, a well-engineered passive rig plus attention to anchoring position and orientation delivers a large share of the comfort benefit for a small share of the cost. It is not a compromise to be ashamed of.

Retrofit versus new build

On a new build you choose placement freely, design the foundation into the structure, and size the electrical plant knowing the load. On a retrofit you are looking for somewhere the unit can go without wrecking weight distribution or displacing something essential, and you may need to build foundation structure into an existing hull. The decision, condensed

  • Roll at anchor is your problem, budget available, hull penetrations unwelcome: gyroscopic, with the generator capacity to feed it.
  • Long transits and underway comfort dominate, and you can support hydraulics: fins, ideally retractable given the operating area.
  • Budget constrained, at-anchor comfort only: a properly made passive rig and disciplined anchoring practice.
  • Premium positioning with long transits and demanding guests: both, which is not unusual on larger vessels.

Can stabilisers be retrofitted to an existing phinisi?

Often, but placement is constrained by where foundation structure can be built and where weight can be added without spoiling trim. The added weight also increases draft, which can cost you anchorages, so it should be assessed together rather than as an isolated equipment decision.
